Now with FMS Stream Tester: REDbug Version 0.64

I’m excited to announce that I had the chance of integrating a fancy new module built by David Hassoun into the REDbug console.  The FMS Stream Test module is a tool that allows you to connect to, play, and seek within your FMS streams.  It supports:

  • RTMP
  • RTMPE
  • RTMPT
  • RTMPTE
  • RTMPS

A screenshot of this new module is below, and if you haven’t already, come check out REDbug Debugging Suite:

Flex 101 Screen Casts: Week 1, Getting Started

I’m co-teaching an online course at the local college with David Hassoun.  Part of the materials that we’ve been building for our students are screen casts.  We figured they’d be a little more lively than a slide presentation.  We also figured they’d help keep students awake when they’re working through the courseware at 3am.  I know…I’ve been there!

If you’re just getting started with Flex development, we’re making these screen casts available to you as they’re created.

This week’s topic was about getting started with Flex development and dealt primarily with the tooling and resources.  So in these screen casts you will see the following topics:

  • Installing and verifying a successful installation of Flex Builder 3 including a quick walk through of some of the important items that were installed.
  • The Tour De Flex application and the companion plugin.  Install and a quick demonstration of how to use it as a resource tool.  (Near the end ran into some quirks with the companion plugin…pretty entertaining.)
  • SVN, Subclipse, and third party code.  Quick overview of why you’d want Subclipse, how to install it into Flex Builder, and how to use it to pull down third party code, in our case flexlib, from a remote SVN respository.  Also, a quick demonstation of how to take that code, create a Flex Library project, and use one of the components in the library within your application. Fire!  Thanks Doug.

Enjoy…and heck…I may start doing this more than blogging…typing tutorials can get so tedious. ;-)

Snow Leopard Quicktime Screen Recording…NOT!

So I’m trying to get some screencasts recorded for a class I’m teaching on Flex.  For some reason my Screenflow program version 1.5.2 could no longer save files after my Snow Leopard upgrade.  So I decided, hey, now’s a good time to try out the Quicktime screen recording feature that was built into Snow Leopard.

So after an hour of trying to actually get through anything useful…

Let me put it this way, I found out there’s a Screenflow 1.5.4 update that can save files on Snow Leopard and I’m back to Screenflow.

Let me put it another way, 116 CPU%??  Yeah…that wasn’t even the highest I saw it.  For a little while it was at 147 CPU%.

So in a nutshell…another thumbs down for Snow Leopard.  Oh, and I like Screenflow.

Off Topic: We’re the band of the future and we’re going to assimilate you.

We’re gearing up for some Geek Rock goodness.  Starting at the end of September we’re going on tour and spreading our blend of rock, Flash platform, and iPhone goodness.  We’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves and we’re going full throttle with a set full of original tunes and original tech.

First, come hang with us Tuesday, Sept 29th as we kick off the party at 360 iDev in Denver.  You’re going to see our newest Flash platform live player goodness along with the world premiere of the iPhone song.

Second, come chill at our session Geek Rock with the Flash Platform during 360|MAX @ Adobe MAX in sunny LA.  Seriously, how punk rock is that?  A band that does a tech session.  We’re going to be playing some Compilers lite and taking a dive into the code and technologies that make our Flash platform and iPhone tick.

Third, come check out take 2 of the Ignite Denver house band goodness @ Ignite Denver 5 in Denver.  Casselman’s is a sweet venue and I heard the sound and lights should be tight.  Can’t wait for that.

In the meantime, feel free to check out our newest song uploads.  Keep an eye on TweetJam, if you bring your mobile internet device to any of our shows with you just mention @thecompilers on Twitter to get good ‘ole TTS to make you a part of Rock history.

It’s gonna be a blast.  Geek rock at it’s finest…so get registered for the party:

Flash Builder 4 Profiler: All Your Backreference Belong to Us.

Along with a new and improved Object References view in the Flash Builder 4 Profiler, there are new and improved settings in the Eclipse preferences.  So now, you can open Eclipse Preferences and go to Flash Builder –> Profiler –> Object References and see the new settings:

By default “Show all back-reference paths” is unchecked and the maximum back-reference paths that will be found is 10. So, if you’re profiling your app and have a strong suspicion that the picture the profiler is painting for you is incomplete, you might want to play around with these settings.
